About the Role
Rhode Island Abortion Fund is seeking its first-ever Executive Director to lead the organization into its next phase of growth and support the organization as it shifts from an all volunteer model to a paid staff and governing board model.
The Executive Director will be the organization’s first paid staff member and will be supported by the Board of Directors. This inaugural role is ideal for a passionate reproductive justice advocate who is interested in being part of the growth of Rhode Island’s only abortion fund. This role will include a combination of day-to-day operations, financial oversight, strategic visioning, relationship building, and program management.
As the fund’s primary spokesperson, the executive director will increase visibility, grow fundraising, and build partnerships. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside the board to develop RIAF’s strategic goals and increase impact through program development and oversight.
The executive director must be based in Rhode Island or be willing to relocate.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Day-to-day Operations
Manage all vendors, consultants, and volunteers
Develop board meeting agendas in collaboration with the board President
Maintain organizational systems and technology, including Google Drive
Monitor the physical mailbox and general email
Order merchandise and manage inventory
Manage the fund’s insurance policy
Strategic Visioning
Determine, with the board, the strategic direction and goals for the organization
Develop and implement strategies to increase the visibility and reach of the organization across Rhode Island
Relationship Building
Build and maintain relationships with clinics, key strategic partners, allies, and supporters to advance the RIAF’s mission
Liaise with the National Network of Abortion Funds
Manage clinic relationships and agreements
Program Management
Manage volunteer program
Work closely with the board on partnerships for Plan B and pregnancy test strip programs
Receive out-of-state funding requests
Collect and analyze program data
Engage in advocacy work around key priorities
Primary Spokesperson
In collaboration with the board communications committee, determine themes and key messages for communications
Seek out media opportunities and act as the spokesperson for the organization
Fundraising
Engage the board in fundraising initiatives
Manage and build relationships with mid-level and major donors
Conduct annual fundraising campaigns, including writing fundraising appeals
Ensure timely and accurate data entry into the CRM; process gifts and send acknowledgments; pull lists and reports as needed
In collaboration with the board events committee, set goals and project manage fundraising events
Financial Management
Run regular financial reports
Manage cash flow and reserves
Collaborate with the bookkeeper to maintain books, file all state and federal reports, conduct financial reconciliation, and pay bills and invoices
Prepare annual budgets
Who You’ll Work With
You will report to the Board of Directors.
You will directly manage volunteers and contractors for the organization.
Skills
Strong administrative and project management skills
Financial management and financial strategy
Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting and compliance
Experience engaging, managing, and developing a board of directors
Strong public speaking and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as a compelling and credible external representative for the organization
A self-starter who is willing to bring creativity and flexibility to the role
Bilingual English/Spanish, or other language prevalent in Rhode Island (Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Cambodian/Khmer, Vietnamese) preferred
High level of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills
Coalition building
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 5-years' equivalent experience
5-10 years of experience in project management
Proven record of successful fundraising in the nonprofit sector
Background in abortion access work, experience in a health center or clinic setting, leadership in an organization that focuses on mutual aid, LGBTQ+ issues, maternal health, racial justice, public health, sexual and reproductive health, and/or sexual and domestic violence
Experience working with nonprofit boards
Clear, compelling, and authentic communicator who is comfortable speaking publicly about reproductive justice issues, including abortion
Familiarity with the New England region's cultural and political landscape
Understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging principles
Must be a Rhode Island resident
Salary and Benefits
Salary: $75,000-$90,000 annually
Benefits: $500/month health insurance stipend, 6 weeks (240 hours) paid time off, and 15 holidays/closure days
